Theo van Doesburg in Weimar: De Stijl in Bauhaus 17 November 2019 –15 November 2020
In the autumn of 2019, Museum Dr8888 will be participating in the international celebration of 100 years of the Bauhaus (1919-2019). Together with our partner the Heinrich Neuy Bauhausmuseum in Steinfurt (Germany) we will be paying attention to the influence of Theo van Doesburg and De Stijl on this educational institution. The Bauhaus was the most innovative academy in the field of visual art, design and architecture and fitted in seamlessly with Van Doesburg’s ideas on the integration of the arts. During his stay in Weimar, Van Doesburg was mainly occupied with architecture. He worked for Drachten for architect Cees Rienks de Boer there. He not only designed the colour scheme for the interior and exterior of 16 houses, but he also designed stained-glass windows and received private commissions in Drachten. In Weimar he gave courses and lectures in his studio to teachers and students of the Bauhaus. He used his designs for Drachten as illustration material. Within a year the influence of De Stijl on the Bauhaus was visible everywhere.
The museum’s own collection is supplemented by loans from the Netherlands and abroad. Besides works by Van Doesburg, also artist Monika Buch will receive a lot of attention.
